USCGAUX IT Department Mission & Vision
Historically, the I-Department has had two major functions; supporting AUXData (including AUXInfo) and supporting the web presence of all the organization structures, from National web site to local Flotillas. In addition, the I-Department was to create and maintain a limited number of applications e.g.; eDirectory, AUXPlus PE, etc.
As the Coast Guard is changing to meet the new paradigm of the world we live in, so must the Auxiliary change in order to support the new Coast Guard. The Coast Guard wants the Auxiliary to move towards becoming a fully integrated force multiplier. To this end, the Auxiliary must maintain credibility by being trained and managed at the same professional levels as the Coast Guard. We must have the flexibility to adapt and have a process of continuous improvement. There are risks to achieving these objectives; the current economic environment is forcing the Auxiliary to cut back at a time when it needs to accomplish more and current recruiting efforts are targeting younger members. These younger members are still working and have growing families and many of these Auxiliarists are struggling to balance family, work, and the Auxiliary.
As ADM Allen stated in his speech on Social Networking, our younger members (speaking of the Active Duty and Reserve force) are use to using the internet; for communications, for fun and for business / school. We (the Coast Guard) must meet their needs if we are to attract, retain and succeed.
The I-Department is prepared to answer this challenge for the Auxiliary. It is our goal to start the transformation of the Auxiliary Technology level to be able to compete and succeed in these challenges.
The department has been reorganized with a greater emphasis on development of advanced applications and secure communications. By focusing on industry standards, the I-Department hopes to be able to entice the large pool of potential technologically savvy recruits to join not only the Auxiliary, but the I-Department. Working and moving in sync with industry standards makes the products that will be produced serviceable, modifiable and productive for years to come. This comes without reliance on specific individuals but the broad based industry human capital.
The I-Department is developing a Human Resources data repository to improve the Auxiliary's readiness to support the Coast Guard. The new I-Department member is the person who sees an Opportunity and creates the Innovative tools that will increase performance by making the task easier, thereby supporting Leadership with improved productivity, whether in human assets or information. The I-Department will be modifying its' web training to assist members to make better use of tools and to concentrate on the content in a world moving to electronic media as the primary source of information.
The department will be creating a standard look and feel website. This will "Brand" the Auxiliary and help site visitors with a common navigation style and easy access to frequently used functions.
