Commodore Donald L. Frasch, currently District Commodore of District Seven, has been elected Deputy National Commodore Operations and & Atlantic Area East. Commodore Mark Simoni, currently Assistant National Commodore Operations Policy & Resources, has been elected Deputy National Commodore Operations Policy & Atlantic Area West. Commodore Marie M. Scholle, currently as District Commodore District Seventeen,has been elected Deputy National Commodore Force Readiness & Pacific Area.

Commodore Thomas C. Mallison has been elected National Vice Commodore. He is currently serving as Deputy National Commodore – Operations Policy and Atlantic Area West. He previously served as District Commodore, Eighth District Eastern Region from 2007-08, as District Vice Commodore from 2005-06, and as District Rear Commodore West from 2003-04. He served as Department Chief of the National Department of Personnel from 2000-02. Commodore Mallison graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Science. He also holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration. Commodore Mallison joined the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary in 1990. He has a wide variety of experiences in both elected and staff offices at all levels from flotilla to National. He is active as Boat Crew Coxswain, PATON Verifier, RBS Visitor, Vessel Examiner, Instructor and Qualification Examiner. He is an AUXOP member. He is a member of Flotilla 63 in Dayton, Ohio. He retired in 2004 as Vice President and Director of Administration with Systran Corporation in Dayton, Ohio. During his business career, he served on the Boards of Directors of three manufacturing companies. He also served on the Board of Directors of a nonprofit corporation in the medical sector. Commodore Mallison served in the U.S. Army both as a commissioned officer and as a non-commissioned officer, and retired with twenty years of service. Overseas tours included Germany, Korea and Vietnam.

Commodore Jim Vass has been elected National Commodore of the Coast Guard Auxiliary for the 2010-2012 Term Commodore Vass began his career in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary in 1991. He has served in all elected positions up to his current role as National Vice Commodore. Commodore Vass is a 1964 graduate of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. He began his military career as an officer in the Army Corps of Engineers serving six and one-half years of active duty and retiring from the reserve program with 28+ years of total service. While serving on active duty, he served in Korea, Vietnam, Germany and the Virgin Islands. After leaving the Army, he joined the DuPont Company and retired after 29 years of service as a Senior Project Engineer. While working with DuPont he was stationed at 7 different sites responsible for major construction activity: Richmond Virginia, Augusta Georgia, Beaumont Texas, Dordrich the Netherlands, Parkersburg West Virginia, Ulsan Korea and Victoria Texas. Commodore Vass is a qualified Instructor, Vessel Examiner, Coxswain and Qualification Examiner. He has been recognized with the following awards during his association with the Auxiliary: Medal of Operational Merit, Auxiliary Commendation Medal, Coast Guard Sustained Auxiliary Service Award, and the Coast Guard Unit Commendation. Commodore Vass is a Professional Engineer in the State of Texas and a Board Member of the local Coastal Conservation Association. Jim was born in Waynesboro, Virginia and is currently living in Port O'Connor, Texas. Jim enjoys working with the Coast Guard Auxiliary and making contacts with the public. Jim also enjoys the recreational aspects of the water as a fisherman and hunter.

The RBS Affairs Department is pleased to announce that the 2010 edition of the Grants Handbook is now available. This is a terrific source of information about potential grants and awards in the field of recreational boating safety. Suppose you're thinking about buying a new boat at an out-of-state boat show or marine dealership. Do you know what the tax rate will be on your dream boat, whether you will need to pay additional tax in your home state, and how many days there are in the registration grace period? BoatU.S. has compiled an online State Boating Tax and Registration Guide here. Clicking on any state will bring up details about sales and "use" taxes, credits that might be given for a boat purchased in a different state, registration grace periods, state decal requirements, and title information. Online links and phone numbers for state boating registration and tax departments are also provided. Auxiliarists who have the option of shopping for a boat in several states might be able to cut their costs significantly by referring to this Guide before getting into boating or trading up.

Recently the crew of an Auxiliary vessel was returning to their Coast Guard Station after searching for some stranded boaters on an island. On board were the coxswain and crew of three with a trainee. Just as they were approaching a Bridge they saw three members of a family fall off their personal watercraft. A mother, father and their 4 ˝-year old son were all struggling in the water to stay afloat. Read how the crew's quick action saved the day, now on SITREP, the Auxiliary's National e-magazine.

The annual business Meeting and luncheon of the National Association of Commodores will be held on Friday, August 27, 2010, from 12-1:30pm. Florida Auxiliary, Division 14, dedicated a memorial wall that was constructed to honor those Division Auxiliarists who have crossed over the bar. The dedication coincided with the 71st anniversary of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, June 26, 2010. The service honored those who served the Auxiliary, their neighbors, and their country. The names that are now memorialized on the wall will forever remind us of our friends who have gone on. A Georgia Auxiliarist is an integral part of a county wide reading program for children. She has incorporated boating safety and life jacket use into the program. The program is named 'Make a Splash' and is featured in the current issue of SITREP, the Auxiliary's National e-magazine.
