These new course descriptions should be posted soon on the C-School portal, so please give them a couple of days to get posted. Both courses are open for enrollment now, however, so don't hesitate. Sign up now, along with your active duty counterpart.

How to Apply: Send Short-Term Training Request (STTR) via your District’s procedure (starts with Flotilla Commander)

Convening Dates: 13-15 August 2010, ATC Mobile, AL

Course descriptions:

AUXILIARY AIR COORDINATOR (AAC) AUX-15

Course Code: 501571
Duration 2.5 Days

Prerequisites: Applicants are an AAC or active duty Auxiliary Liaison Officer (AuxLO), or candidates therefor with an internet email account capable of receiving attachments to benefit most from this training, therefore the email address must be included in Block 22 of the STTR prior to approval. Districts should screen candidates to ensure potential for assignment to relevant aviation staff positions. CG Air Station Auxiliary Liaison Officers (AuxLO) are encouraged to attend as a team with their current or prospective AAC. No civilian contractors are authorized to attend.

Purpose
This two and a half day experience provides students critical foundations for working as a team (AAC and AuxLO) managing the Auxiliary aviation operations for an Air Station. The AAC is the primary link between the AuxLO and the Auxiliary aviators, responsible for day to day scheduling and qualifications tracking. The AuxLO is the primary link between Auxiliary aviators and the Air Station they serve. This course includes familiarization with CG Air Station procedures and both active duty and Auxiliary operations. In addition, it will acquaint the AAC and AuxLO with methods to integrate Auxiliary aviation into Air Station operations.

December 2009 NON-Compliant Auxiliary Aviators

Here are the procedures for ADDRESSING QUALIFICATION ISSUES FOR NON-COMPLIANT AUXILIARY AVIATORS.

NOTE: This document is designed as a job aid for those responsible for Auxiliary aviation units.  It neither creates nor removes any current policy or procedure for AUXAIR, but is intended to provide guidance to those existing policies that may otherwise be found in a number of different documents and Commandant Instructions.

December 2009

1.  Pilot-In-Command Responsibility and Authority

Recent inquiries suggest that it would be useful to review the implications and responsibilities of being pilot-in-command of an Auxiliary flight.  We in Auxiliary Aviation are in a unique position among aviators.  Not only are we certified by and responsible to the FAA for the conduct of our flying, but we are also certified by and responsible to the Coast Guard.

Click on this link to access an analysis of the responsibilities and authorities of a Pilot-In-Command from both perspectives.  It is important to note that no new policy or decision is reflected in this document.  Rather, it is an analysis and exposition on existing policy, guidance, and regulation.

2. C-Schools at N-Train 2010

NOTICE: The January 2010 convenings of Aux-14 and Aux-15 which were to be held at N-Train in St. Louis have been postponed due to lack of attendees.  We are re-scheduling for a time in the spring and a place yet to be finalized.  Watch this space for an announcement when the decision is made.

We apologize to those brave souls who signed up for the mid-winter St. Louis convenings and now have to wait until later.  We understand that it is disruptive to make such a change, but it was unavoidable.  We are looking at some options that we think you will find interesting.

Aux-14 - Flight Safety
The target audience for Aux-14 (Flight Safety) now includes active duty Flight Safety Officers.  This represents a change from previous convenings of this class.  In a manner similar to supporting a working partnership between AACs and AuxLOs, we wish to establish and support a close working partnership between Auxiliary District Flight Safety Officers and their active duty counterparts - the air station Flight Safety Officer.  The course content will help the FSO gain a more complete understanding of the general aviation pilots and aircraft that are serving their air station, as well as helping the DFSO gain a better understanding of the active duty aviation environment and people with whom they are working.

Aux-15 - AAC & AuxLO
This course is for AACs and AuxLOs, to help them gain understanding each other's worlds and the guidelines under which Auxiliary Aviation operates.  The target audience for this course is AACs, those who may be appointed as an AAC, and active duty AuxLOs (or soon-to-be).  The concepts of team-building and shared knowledge between the Auxiliary and active duty personnel as stated for Flight Safety are employed in this course, which has a focus on operational procedures, rules, scheduling, and the like.

3. AOPA Summit in Tampa

On 5-7 November, Auxiliary Aviation participated in AOPA's first "Summit," a national-level, convention-style event.  Over 8000 pilots and aircraft owners attended, many arriving by approximately 1000 general aviation aircraft.  We all spent three days in the company of the leaders of General Aviation - associations, manufacturers, avionics suppliers, and many other of the professionals who lead the industry in our country.

This was a unique opportunity for us to generate some visibility for our program.  Spearheaded by D7's Clearwater AAC, David Lemon, Coast Guard Auxiliary Aviation was well-represented with a booth at the main convention area and a Cessna 182 in the airport static display area.  We even had an HH-60 from Air Station Clearwater on display each day.  The crowd loved watching them arrive and depart as well as seeing their Guardians up close and personal.

We talked with several hundred pilots, many of whom didn't know about Auxiliary Aviation - even if they were aware of the Coast Guard Auxiliary itself.  We are currently in the process of re-contacting almost 100 aviators who indicated a strong interest in becoming a part of the Coast Guard Auxiliary.  Kudos and thanks to David Lemon, D7 DSO-AV Don Zinner, and all the other fine folks who helped us.  We look forward to being a part of next year's Summit, which is scheduled for Long Beach, CA in November 2010.

August 2009

Incident Command System (ICS) 210 Requirement

The deadline for completion of ICS-210 has been extended to 31 March 2010.
Thus, although it is encouraged, new pilot certifications will not require
that course until that deadline.  Bear in mind, however, that on 01 April
2010 ALL existing pilots who have not completed the course will go REYR on
that date and will not be eligible to receive orders until that course is
completed and the results recorded.

FY 2010 C-School Schedule and info

FY 2010 C-School class dates are now set for Aux-18 (AUXAIR Spatial Disorientation and CRM Training), which is taught at NAS Pensacola.  Enrollment is now open for these dates:

  • 18-19 February 2010
  • 18-19 March 2010
  • 17-18 June 2010
All pilots are required to attend this combination of schools within one
year of initial certification, so please make note of these class dates and
plan accordingly.  Consideration will be given, of course, to those who have
not had an opportunity to attend during the 9-month gap between the last
convening and the next upcoming one.  For questions, please contact Wilson Riggan, DVC-OA.

Aux-15, for AACs and AuxLOs is being held at NACON 2009 in Chicago.  The
next convenings of Aux-14 (DFSO) and Aux-15 (AAC/AuxLO) are planned for
N-Train 2010 in St. Louis.  Please look here for additional information as
it becomes available.  We will provide notice when those are available for
enrollment.

All C-School enrollments are by Short Term Training Request (STTR), ANSC
7059.  Online form can be found at http://forms.cgaux.org/archive/a7059f.pdf.   For more information follow this link to the C-School web page.
