April 2009

April 13, 2009 - Click here for information on a planned amateur radio special event that will be held in October 2009 in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the CG Auxiliary. April 9, 2009 - A new CD is available from the ANSC on training for the Telecommunications Operator PQS (Personal Qualification). This CD contains the PQS, all the reference documents, and a new Interactive Mentoring Guide to provide everything needed for radio qualification on one CD. Order CD 2015A from the ANSC.

March 12, 2009 - There is a new Mentoring guide now available for the PQS (Personal Qualification Standard) that has been developed by the Telecommunications Division. A CD with complete documentation for the PQS, the Guide and all references with hyperlinks will be available shortly at the Auxiliary National Supply Center.

August 2008

August 27, 2008 - At this time the new Coast Guard Telecommunications Manual (COMDTINST M200.3) has not been authorized for Internet release and is therefore not yet available on the CG Directive system web site.   If you are interested in obtaining a copy this manual (in electronic form) it may be obtained from your local commands, who may download it via the CG intranet system.  The TQS (TeleCom Qualifications Standards) manual will reference pieces of numerous other documents and manuals.  To access the full text of these additional reference materials, click here for the URL links to these other related documents.

June 16, 2008 - NEW PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS STANDARD ( TelComPQS) 
A new Personal Qualifications Standard (PQS) for Auxiliary Telecommunications has been developed by the Operations (Response) Department and approved by the National Board and CG Headquarters.  The Chief Director of the Auxiliary has announced the implementation of the new personal qualification standard (PQS) for a Telecommunications Operator (TCO) specialty.  Effective 1 August 2008, all new applicants for fixed land or land mobile radio facility certification and/or operation must be certified as a TCO.  Current AUXCOM-rated members will continue to be eligible for facility ownership and operation indefinitely, as long as their AUXCOM was earned prior to August 1, 2008.  Details of this PQS are available on the Chief Director’s Web site at "Auxiliary Telecommunications PQS Announcement 11 June 2008".  The PQS for Auxiliary Telecommunications is posted at "Telecommunications PQS"

Amateur Radio Special Event

Commemorating the

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Anniversary

All U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary members that are Amateur Radio operators are invited to operate as “Special Event Radio Stations” on Saturday October 18, 2008 on Amateur H.F. frequencies to commemorate the  Anniversary  of  the  U.S. Coast  Guard  Auxiliary.

All amateurs are invited to set up and operate Special Event Radio stations using High Frequency all across the nation. Official USCG Aux Special Event Amateur Radio stations will be operating “On the Air” with a Special 1 X 1 call all day contacting amateur radio operators and other U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary stations from coast to coast.

All official Special Event Radio Stations will be sent Free Commemorative QSL’s to mail out. Last year over 30 USCG Aux.  Special Event Stations contacted thousands of other amateurs and USCG Auxiliary members to commemorate the USCG Auxiliary Anniversary.

For more than 50 years, there has been an annual "crossband communications test" carried out by military HF stations in conjunction with ARMED FORCES DAY. Some years back, the Coast Guard participated in this effort. For the past few years, lack of resources has made that participation impossible.
This year, however, is different.

At the suggestion/request of the CAMS (Communications Area Master Stations), the Coast Guard will be an active participant on the 10th of MAY and the stations and personnel will all come from the CGAUX HF Program. Three separate stations will be on the air, one from the East Coast, one from the Dallas area, and one from Southern California. The station owners are in charge of recruiting and monitoring the operators who will man the stations.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the Crossband Communications Test, military stations transmit on military frequencies outside of, but close to several amateur bands. Those stations then listen for calls from "ham stations" who are transmitting within the relevant ham bands. So for example, a military station, callsign "WAR", will transmit on a publicized frequency near the 20 meter band and will announce that it is listening for calls on 14.295 MHz. Ham stations will call on that frequency and listen for a response from WAR on the military frequency.

The Coast Guard Stations which will be on the air, with their individual callsigns, schedules, frequencies and points of contact are:

2/1/2007 - "NEW VERSION OF form # 7004 (old form # 2736A)

Effective immediately there is a new version of the RADIO FACILITY INSPECTION AND OFFER FOR USE FORM. Previous editions of this form are obsolete and not to be used.

There are several minor changes to this form which are in process, but until those are implemented on the form, please note the following:

1. In Section II, item 2, the line that now says " MT/VHF-AM/SSB" should read "MF/HF - SSB". This line is intended for entry of the equipment to be used on the MF/HF CGAUX HF contingency frequencies and other District authorized MF/HF frequencies.  Also the line that now reads "VHF-AM/SSB" will be changed to read "VHF-AM".
2. In Section 3, two additional definitions should be added:
   1. CGAUX VHF channels
   2. CGAUX HF Contingency Comms Channels
3. In section 7, PLEASE be sure to enter the latitude and longitude of any fixed land station in the format requested (degrees, minutes and tenths of minutes). If the original submission is in degrees, minutes and seconds, please change it to the requested format.
